I'm in NJ, and my daughter is in a half day kindagarten. It well and trully SUCKS. not the amount of time...if they could get what they needed done in a school day done that would be great!... however she is up to 12, yes I said 12 pages of homework a week... that needs to be done by thursday evening, and that's not included work that gets sent home that doesn't get completed. 95% of the time it's a battle to get her to any of it because I have to sit there and TEACH her the lesson to be able to do the home work... It takes us a whole hour to do 2 simple pages. If there was full day kindergarten, I feel like she wouldn't be falling behind so much, that she wouldn't need a Pre-First class (which is what's going to happen in essence keeping her back a year) And at age 5 she is MORE than ready for a full day af school as long as the curriculum is age appropioate and engaging.
-I'm sorry is this argumentative, I'm just a frustrated parent that is seeing the NIN-results of a half-day kindergarten.

i fully agree with all of these articles and comments. i really just kept my children in half day because of a gut feeling that it was the right thing for our family but now i can see all of the reasons why i did do this. thank you. i will not let society dictate how i raise my family! never have never will!

My friend is a Kindergarten teacher in Stamford for which it is full-day. She hates it. The schedule is VERY structured with little to no room for anything additional and the Teacher and kids MUST stay on schedule in order to meet all the objectives. Forget about a child that is having problems because they then take everyone off schedule.
She believes it not the best way teach children at this age because there is very little freedom for the children to be children, to socialize and to assimilate into the education process.
She also stated the Children are on a very rigorous curriculum that they are working on Sentence structure at the same time they are learning Colors and Shapes.
I do hope the Parents get to know the teacher to see if they are motivated with the full-day program, because many Educators that I know are not a big fan of it.

Great information! I am a mother of 2 and am now facing sending my first child to kindergarten. All public schools by us have full day kindergarten and I absolutely do not want my daughter gone that long. There is no reason for her to have to spend 7 hours a day, 5 days a week in school. She will have the rest of her life to study and learn. She should be allowed to be a child for as long as possible. We are going to have to pay to send her to private school so that she can go for only the half day. I do not understand why we push our children so hard. I believe we are setting them up for a big fall by forcing them to work that hard at such a young age.

Wonderful works cited and wonderful article promoting our children and the rights of parents to decide for our little ones. Not too long ago, there wasn't a kindergarten and nursey school/ preschool wasn't invented! First grade was in fact, first grade.
From a mother of 3 children who has chosen happily to stay at home with our kids for over 11 years now, I promote the 1/2 day Kindergarten program and would never want the Government to mandate universal preschool either. There is a big push to grow up too quickly and in fact, we have more depression, weight issues, & over all stress in our society than ever before (both children and adults). . . people do need to look at what we're doing as a society and slow down. Let children play - this is the way to discovery and learning in the young years - imaginary play is irreplaceble. . .and unfortunately, we are raising a community of children who don't know how to play unless told how and what to do. We need to put children first and evaluate truly what that entails not from a consumer hungry world but from the simplicity of a child.
